Monday Musings is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should be Reading.
This weeks Musing asks: What’s your favorite “cozy” book — and, by that, I’m meaning “curl-up-on-a-cold-day comfort read“? Or, if you don’t have a particular book, what genre do you most feel like reading when the weather starts to turn colder?
To be quite honest, I don’t really break books down in this sort of fashion. I read the same stuff baking my buns on the beach as I do curled-up on the couch in the cold. For the most part I just pick up something off my TBR pile and read it. And let me note, for good measure, that I don’t have one of these out of control TBR piles that all of these September Book Ban people have. I usually have a controlled shelf of less than 25 books and I don’t allow myself to do anymore than two big book shopping trips without finishing the books I bought on the trip before last. In this way I avoid the chaos. Anyway, I digress. The only reading I do that could be considered comfort reading is after I have finished reading one or two really awful books (i.e. DNFs or Big Disappointments) After I finish one or two of those, often I will go to my shelf and purposefully choose a book that I know will not let me down. Usually this is something from a favorite author like Timothy Findley (do you hear angels signing?) or a genre that I know is safe, which for me is usually historical fiction or an LGBT read.
I have several “cozy” books. Check out what I am Musing for Monday.
I always get the urge to read George R R Martin when the weather turns cold. Maybe it’s the “Winter is Coming” thing? 😉
btw, got linked to you through Curl up and Read, congrats!
I usually read what is on my TRB list also, but on a cold or rainy day, I sometimes stray to a favorite author, so I feel all warm and cozy inside.
Sometimes I wish that I had more restraint when it comes to book buying, but I am doing better. I’m now tracking the books I buy (on a blog) and also the books I’m reading from my stacks.
I like the idea of just picking up a book that appeals to me, no matter what the weather. But I do tend toward certain genres when it’s cold.
Here’s my musing:
Good for you for tackling your TBR pile! I have one of those humongous, out-of-control TBR piles that never seems to get smaller.
it is great to have some authors we feel confident picking up as a ‘comfort’ read..well, at least until their newest book lets us down. Which sadly happens sometimes.
I do wish that, like you, I had a more under control TBR pile…
erm ,usually a thriller be a comfort read or a short evening novella something to be read in a night ,all the best stu
